Friday night saw the Club hold another very successful annual dinner & presentation evening. Held for the 7th successive year at the Craiglands Hotel, Ilkley the night brought together players past and present and many friends of the club.
The highlights of this years events included a Question of Cricket and an Auction of Sporting Memorabilia. This year the club were unable to afford all the technical equipment and expertise that has been part of previous dinners, however this did not detract from the evening’s entertainment.
A highly successful Question of Cricket was the main event of the evening, where 3 members of the 1st team, Captain Paul Barton, Mark Booth and Jack Marchant took on 3 members of the 2nd team Captain Ray Smith, Andrew Stoddart and Rohan Chatterjee with the 2nd team coming out convincing winners. Special thanks go to Andrew “Sue Barker” Brown as quizmaster and Danielle Dudley for scoring.
An auction of sporting memorabilia followed again handled brilliantly by Auctioneer Andrew Brown ably assisted by Naomi Claydon and April Brown, lots included a cricket cap singed by the 05 England ashes squad and a cricket ball signed by Aussie greats Glenn McGrath & Brett Lee.
As usual the club annual awards were presented to the worthy winners, by Mr David Booth father of 1st team player Mark Booth and long time supporter and friend of Ben Rhydding Cricket club and Robin Snook president of Ben Rhydding Hockey Club. 1st team awards were dominated by Nick Smith who collected the bowling, batting, all rounder and players player awards a very successful debut season for Smudge. The 2nd team awards were spread across the team with 4 separate winners for each award. For the 2nd year running the dubious double of 3rd Team Player of the year and Winner of the Duck cup was awarded, this year to Alex Miller. Club awards went to Joe Taylor who won the Under 18s Shield and Peter Taylor who was awarded the Ben Rhydding Cup. A full list of winners is attached.
Speaking on the conclusion of the award presentations, Club President Frank Taylor congratulated the winners and thanked the Committee for their support, particularly Jane Thoy for taking on the heavy administrative burden that goes with membership of the league. Mr Taylor went on to say “Season 2008 will be a crucial one for the club, needing the commitment and support of all associated with Ben Rhydding Cricket Club”
On another positive night for the club around 500.00 pounds was raised on the evening. Thanks to all those who bought raffle tickets and made successful bids in the auction.
Finally special thank yous must go to Andrew Brown who hosted the Question of Cricket brilliantly and also organised and administered the Auction. Particular special thanks also go to Alex Miller and Matthew Holdsworth. Alex, along with Mrs Debbie Miller came up with the idea for the question of cricket and worked hard to put the quiz together in the question of sport format and especially to research the questions. Matthew provided the expertise to give the technical and graphical support to the event a particular highlight being the picture board round.
Speaking about the evening club president, Frank Taylor said “This has been a thoroughly enjoyable evening in the spirit for which BRCC is renowned and a great credit to all involved in organising the event
